Refractive Error
Most of the visual complain is related to refractive problems (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism). The conventional treatment is based on medical spectacles, followed by contact lenses. The spectacles could be inconvenient to many patients, especially with high prescriptions, due to heavy weight if the glasses, or for cosmetic reasons. Contact lenses are not without risks, and patients who use them are more likely to develop vision-compromising complications over time than patients who have LASIK surgery.

Infection rate with contact rate could be as high as one in 100 over 30 years of use, and it could significant vision loss in one in 2,000. According to researchers in Oregon, the risk of significant vision loss due to LASIK surgery is about one in 10,000 cases (Mathers W et al. Risk of lasik surgery vs contact lenses. Archives of Ophthalmology. 2006;124:1510-1511)
